GIGS Artist Talk | Leeds Lit Fest

Here’s a sketch from yesterday’s wonderful talk! It’s been a very busy weekend – lots of being out and about in Leeds. We saw a good amount of exciting birds (including both a heron and a falcon or something similar on Leeds uni campus!), ate too much delicious food, and had/listened to a lot of interesting chats.

This was my first ever visit to Chapel FM, in lovely Seacroft, a very green area and also very rich in birds of prey – mostly red kites. We were so lucky as one was basically flying alongside the bus at one point in the journey – it was a very close-up view of such a beautiful and deadly bird. I love any opportunity to get on a bus and go touring round parts of Leeds I don’t know so well, but this felt really special.

The talk was with Si Smith and Mark Mosedale, all about their new book, GIGS! It was fascinating to listen to them discuss the seven-year process of bringing this book to life. I hope some of the notes I’ve captured in this sketch above help convey the fun and flowing conversation. I loved the funny times when they disagreed with each other on remembered timelines or other details too. What a cool team! The book itself, of course, looks absolutely amazing. If I can, I’ll try to get down to OK Comics on Thursday for the launch party – I see someone’s made a special beer for the occasion, and that just makes me smile so much. Thank you so much to Leeds Lit Fest for putting on another amazing comics-based event!

I had to run away before the very end of the chat, unfortunately as we had an Ambiente dinner date to keep in town, I only hope we weren’t too noisy when clomping up and down the stairs as this talk was actually recorded for the Chapel FM radio show! So if you missed it, you should be able to tune in again very soon!
