Placards & Panels

Yesterday I had a great time at Hyde Park Book Club, attending this excellent talk with Myfanwy Tristram and the Rickard Sisters, as part of Leeds Lit Fest! I loved listening to these excellent comics-makers talk about their inspirations, their craft, and their new books.

I haven’t yet read the Rickards’ books, but that’s only due to my messy mind, as I’ve been really interested in their work for ages. It’s extremely cool that they are sisters who work together and that they really get on wonderfully together in this work. I am in awe and hopeful for a potential future where I write something with one of my siblings too. I love that they have brought important historical texts (and the stories surrounding them) to life through comics, helping to highlight important movements in the story of civil rights in England.

I got a copy of Myf’s new book, Noisy Valley, which I am very excited to read. Myf is an incredibly cool artist whose work I’ve admired for a long time. I was honoured to be a part of the massive Draw The Line, a collection of 100+ positive political actions people can take in their day-to-day life to enact change.

It was a delight and also mildly surreal to meet these artists whose work I really admire, and not only that, but we’ll both have been published by the amazing SelfMadeHero, when I finally do finish my own graphic novel 🙂

I didn’t take down a great deal of words-based notes from the talk, as I was having fun sketching them all in the process of interviewing each other. It was an excellent format for a discussion and felt very friendly all round. Massive thanks to everyone involved in putting this event together <3
