I had a lot of fun drawing some frogs the other night, thinking I might try to play along with this nice august drawing challenge from an artist on instagram (https://www.instagram.com/art.of.caro/). I was half-watching star wars episode 1 – mouth hanging open at how incredibly openly racist it is. I loved it when it came out – I must have been around 6 or 7 and I was so excited that there was a star wars film for ‘me’/’my generation’ – strange feeling. Aaanyway, I just started drawing a little Kermit eye, and all this spilled out of my pen! That was lovely. I got about 45mins into the film and just had enough and continued on with my wee drawing. I used some references for the horse, but was suuuuuper happy with myself for managing to get the basic shape without much reference.
I’m from Northern Ireland, and if you don’t know, Country & Western is a big deal there. I’ve been loving seeing younger people (including my generation) get into / seize that scene in different ways, especially queer and feminist instances of this (much much thanks to lil nas x for his HUGE influence there). There’s so much camp joy and gorgeous heartbreaking feelings in country & western. I was super excited to try and emulate the gorgeousness of Peter McAteer’s (https://www.instagram.com/pete.ey/) ‘I wanna be a cowboy, baby!’ print, but realised I am still a ways away off backgrounds & scenery… haha it always seems easy until I actually try.
But I like this really really quick background – super simple, and it surprised me! I wasn’t planning on doing any layering stuff at all, but I reduced the opacity of one to have a peep at what was underneath & I think I gasped a little.
I absolutely love playing with the hue & saturation mixer.
