While working at Footprint, I’ve helped organise Leeds Zine Fair for several years now, and part of that has included sometimes designing the posters and fliers for the event! See past years’ efforts below
2017
This was my first go at making a poster for quite a big event, and while I was nervous about it, I was (and still am) really inspired by the dynamism in the art of Eleanor Davis. I wanted to draw courageous and angry characters to evoke the idea of coming together to inspire each other politically as the landscape had taken a particularly bleak turn over the previous year.
I was working a lot with brush and ink at the time, and experimenting with hand lettering. I really like what I put together for the main text.
2018
In this design, I really wanted to show off my enthusiasm for drawing lots and lots of people! This was my first go at doing some intentional riso colour mixes too – later I would come to understand a bit better about how texture affects the final result (ie makes it more interesting), but I do still really like the purples I made, and still really like all these little zine freaks 🙂
2023
I was interested in trying out more inky textures, using letter stamps and playing with riso colour mixes for this poster & flier design. As well as utilising some sneaky sketchbook zine angels for extra decoration.
I really like plants growing out of heads.
Above is the back of the flier, and to the right is a portrait of me in front of the poster, taken by my very cool friend Susie Rumsby.
